Accelerated Degree Program Serves Those Who Help Others
Working professionals who aim higher are finding support and success in the accelerated Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS) program at Stan State campuses in Turlock and Stockton. A group of recent graduates completed their degrees at the Stockton Center while holding jobs in the San Joaquin Human Services Agency (HSA).
“I entered the BASS program as a 48-year-old married mother with ‘receiving a B.A. by the time I’m 50’ on my bucket list,” said Jennifer Lovick, an eligibility worker in the agency’s intake department. “During the program I had two major surgeries, bought a house, moved, sent my youngest off to college in Arizona and worked full time. I struggled at times, but always kept my eye on the prize.”
Through the year and a half-long program, Lovick said she realized working with kids was her passion. “There were a couple of professors I had that showed their love of teaching and it was their example that led me to this conclusion,” she said. Teaching 3rd or 4th grade became her ultimate goal.
Andrea Resendiz, a bilingual eligibility worker, hopes to use the education gained at Stan State to advance in child-centered services in San Joaquin County. “I am a people person and I take pleasure in helping those in need. What I enjoy most is the fact that I have the means to make a difference through the work that I do. There are many families that are experiencing financial hardships and language barriers. Knowing that my job helps those in need brings me the most joy,” she said.

Like many young college graduates, Mara Hernandez had a bachelor’s degree and was looking for direction. While earning her degree in sociology at UC Berkeley in 2012, Hernandez became interested in working in health, and a conversation with her mother provided a possible path.
“My parents told me about the field of genetic counseling,” said Hernandez, a native of Lafayette who now lives in Berkeley. “My mom had received genetic counseling at UCSF for a family history of cancer. Once I learned about it, I saw that this is an area where I could make a positive impact on the lives of people who are going through scary, difficult or complicated health situations.”
She searched the National Society of Genetic Counselors website and starting making phone calls to pick the brains of people working in genetic counseling. She not only discovered that many of them earned their master’s degree at Stanislaus State, but they had great things to say about the program.

Best Nursing Schools in California
“Selecting the best nursing school in California can be difficult. To make the process easier first look for a school that supports students towards licensure and beyond. A great way to measure this is through NCLEX-RN “pass rates.” We have ranked the top 50 nursing schools in California by analyzing current and historical NCLEX-RN “pass rates”, meaning the percentage of graduates who pass the exam, out of the 126 RN programs in the state. Programs reviewed include schools that offer an Associate in Nursing (ADN/ASN), BSN, or Direct-Entry MSN Degree.”

10 states where graduate degrees boost your pay the most
“Many workers opt to go back to school for the promise of higher earnings, a better job title, or both. And in some cases, that’s a move that can really pay off. The median salary for workers with advanced degrees is $69,240, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, which is over 32% more than what those with a mere bachelor’s degree are earning.
On the other hand, getting a graduate degree comes at a cost, and while the price tag can vary tremendously based on the university and program in question, it’s critical to make sure that your potential earnings are enough to justify the upfront expense. With that in mind, here are the top 10 states where your graduate degree is likely to give you the greatest bump in salary over a bachelor’s, courtesy of Student Loan Hero.”
