Global Faculty Learning Academy I

Overview

Academy I provides opportunity and support for developing proposals for financially accessible, short-term study abroad (or away) programs from initial idea through all phases of development. Over the course of this 4-5 day Academy, participants apply best practices for developing, advocating for, and championing short-term programs. Following Academy I participation, further support for launching promising programs is provided.

Participation is open to Stan State full-time lecturers and tenure/tenure-track faculty (Unit 3). Space is limited.

Academy applications will be reviewed by members of the International Education Advisory Committee and should include:

  • Narrative (maximum of 750 words) describing a short-term study abroad program you might develop or champion, including:
    • Program/experience name, course connected to the experience, timing for physical mobility, vision of on-site activities, length of program, location, anticipated enrollment
    • Previous/related personal and/or professional experience facilitating study abroad/away or other off-campus student activities as applicable
    • Previous/related personal and/or professional experience in the proposed study abroad location as applicable
    • Previous/related experience incorporating global/international/intercultural content in the curriculum as applicable
  • Statement of support from department chair/program director also noting relationship between the proposed experience and academic program, general education, graduation, and/or accreditation requirements as applicable
  • Abbreviated CV (up to 3 pages)
  • For the Ensenada-based Academy – Copy of picture page of passport (expiration date must be at least six months after program end)

The Academy is facilitated by Dr. Kari Knutson Miller, Dean of Professional and Global Education and Senior International Officer. Dr. Knutson Miller has more than 20 years of experience facilitating and supporting short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs. Dr. Knutson Miller is joined by faculty with related experience; staff critical to program implementation and support; and Stan State international partners.

Committed preparation for and active, full participation in the Academy is required. At present, four academy schedule options are planned for winter and spring 2026. Additional academy options for summer and fall 2026 will be scheduled at a later date.

Global Faculty Learning Academy – January 2026 – Ensenada, Mexico

Tentative details; to be confirmed. Participants depart Sunday, January 11 for a San Diego-based transfer to Ensenada, Mexico for a 5-day Academy located at CETYS University. Participants return to the U.S. on Saturday, January 17. Financial support for Academy-related travel and related on-site experiences is provided.

Applicant proposals emphasizing short-term, study abroad experiences in Mexico will be prioritized in review and selection for participation.

Applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 14. Participants will be notified by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 21.

Global Faculty Learning Academy – January 2026 – Stan State

Tentative details; to be confirmed. This alternate winter break, 4-day Academy is located on the Turlock campus (Monday, January 19 – Thursday, January 22). Lunch provided. Participants receive a $1,000 budget to support future travel or other approved expenses aligned with familiarization and capacity building for launch and/or advocacy for short-term study abroad and away programs.

Applicant proposals emphasizing financially accessible, short-term, study abroad (and away) experiences will be prioritized in review and selection for participation.

Applications are due by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 14. Participants will be notified by 5:00 PM on Friday, November 21.

Global Learning Academy – March 2026 – Puerto Rico

Tentative details; to be confirmed. Participants depart to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a 5-day Academy located at Interamerican University. Financial support for Academy-related travel and related on-site experiences is provided.

Applicant proposals emphasizing short-term, study abroad (away) experiences in Puerto Rico will be prioritized in review and selection for participation.

Global Learning Academy – April 2026 – Stan State

Tentative details; to be confirmed. This alternate spring break, 4-day Academy is located on the Turlock campus. Lunch provided. Participants receive a $1,000 budget to support future travel or other approved expenses aligned with familiarization and capacity building for launch and/or advocacy for short-term study abroad and away programs.
